Alen Stajcic Departs Philippine Women’s National Football Team

“Head coach and assistant coach leave after historic World Cup campaign”

Alen Stajcic has departed as head coach of the Philippine women’s national football team, together with his chief assistant Nahuel Arrarte.

The two coaches’ contracts expired at the conclusion of the team’s campaign in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, and they have chosen not to renew.

Stajcic took over as coach of the Filipinas in October 2021, and he quickly led the team to historic achievements. In his first tournament at the helm, the Filipinas advanced to the semifinals of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022, in the process earning a ticket to the World Cup.

The team then went on to win the AFF Women’s Championship at home last year, and they bagged a bronze medal in the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam.

In the World Cup, Stajcic guided the Filipinas to a breakthrough win over co-host New Zealand in their second match in Group A — a result that elevated the profile of the team not just in the Philippines but globally.

Stajcic’s departure is a significant loss for the Filipinas, but team manager Jefferson Cheng said the team is grateful for his contributions.

“We thank Alen and Nahuel for their service to the team,” said Cheng. “They have helped us achieve great things, and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors.”

The search for a new coach for the Filipinas is already underway, with Cheng saying the team is looking for someone who can “continue the progress that we have made.”
